Hofstra a wealthy man in the lumber business. The college began under the name of New York University in 1935. In 1937, it was recognized as an independent school and the name was changed to Hofstra College. In 1963 the college gained university status and the name was again changed to Hofstra University.

The grounds of Hofstra University are a beautiful site to behold. With over 200 acres, the campus is a member of the American Public Gardens Association. The gardens feature over 12,000 trees with over 600 different varieties to enjoy. The Arboretum, which was begun by the Hofstra themselves, is a wonderful educational experience for both students and visitors. They even have a two acre Model Bird Sanctuary and a Sculpture Garden with the works of many famous artists for all to enjoy. These are a must see for all visitors and can either be done through a group tour or a self guided tour.

Today, Hofstra University is a much sought after private institution of higher learning. They offer excellent academic education for students of all levels.
